July 31 - Cedar Bluff State Park and Hays, Kansas

We went for an early morning walk, only about 1.25 miles, before the heat of the day.  Since it was due to be a scorcher, we decided to go into the nearby town of Hays, Kansas and find a place to hang out in air conditioning.
I dropped Peter off at the Breathe Coffee House near the Fort Hays State College, which turned out to be a "hip" nonprofit coffee house, that encouraged folks to just hang out.  I went shopping in the local mall.  I needed to replace my old, stretched out swimsuit, and this mall had a JC Penney's and a Christopher and Banks.  I was successful, and spent the afternoon window shopping--and bought a nice pair of black jeans.
I went back to the coffee house, and we sat in the cool and read. We found a very nice Mexican restaurant for dinner.  On the way to the restaurant, the car thermometer read 108 degrees.  The sun is what really does it.  Finally, to round out the day in the air conditioned locales, we went to a movie at the local AMC cinemas.  We saw the new Spiderman movie.  Peter and I, and one other couple, were the only ones in the theater.  As luck would have it, 3/4 of the way through the movie, the movie just stopped, and they couldn't reboot it.  They gave us passes for a free movie, but we don't know how the movie ended.  Oh well, we'll have to catch it when it comes out on Netflix.
After the movie, the temperature had lowered a bit, and it became cloudy.  On the way back to the campground, given the Kansas totally open vistas, we watched the sunset on a dome of the sky covering 180 degrees.  Then we watched the lightening on the horizon, all the way back.  Finally, as we approached the State Park, we saw a line of red flashing lights, a good 50 of them, all flashing in unison, every 5 seconds.  These are the lights on the wind turbines.  The locals demanded that the lights be synchronized, as when they weren't, it was driving them crazy.  The huge vistas provide really remarkable views.
