August 9 - first day of our Utah trip. To Salisbury, NY.

Our fist day out was a 200 mile, 4 hour trip.  All on I-90.  Easy driving.  I forgot how beautiful driving through western MA is.  The Pike goes up into the Berkshires, and there are amazing views of green tree-covered mountains and valleys on both sides.  Eastern New York is quite nice too.

Once we got past Albany, we followed the Mohawk River for many, many miles.  This is the current Erie Canal.  The land turned to lots of green farmlands.  Very picturesque.  We got off of the Interstate, and went about 15 miles to our campground in Salisbury, NY.  Sort of out in the middle of nowhere.  But the owner, a retired army engineer, built the campgrounds and opened them up about 5 years ago.  It is quite large, interspaced with nice, shady pine trees, and has the Spruce Creek running along one side.

We are about 20 miles from Herkimer, NY.  I especially remember this town, as the first day Shanti went into 6th grade, his teacher, Ron Berger, took them all to Herkimer, NY to go to the Herkimer Diamond Mines to hunt for Herkimer diamonds.  A long ways, but Shanti came home very excited.
