August 19 - Howe, Indiana

It was a very hot, sunny day.  We needed to do laundry, and the campground's laundromat was right next to the swimming pool.  So, while the clothes were drying for an hour, I went swimming.  It was a really long pool, and I was the only one swimming.  Very refreshing.  I was really surprised that this very large campgrounds, with well over 100 sites, had only 3 washing machines, and 4 dryers.  Since I went in the fairly early morning, I was the only one there also, so it worked out.

After lunch, we took a quick walk about the campgrounds, and down to the lake again.  Peter worked a bit more on his blog, and then we decided to go into the nearby town of Shipsawana.  This is purported to be an Amish/Menonite tourist attraction.  The Amish give buggy tours, there is a museum about their culture, lots of shops with their goods for sale, and you can even have dinner with an Amish family.  We had mixed feelings about setting up the Amish as a tourist attraction.  Somehow, it doesn't seem respectful.  In any case, we were underwhelmed with the area.  However, we did really go there for the restaurant, the Blue Gate.  It is an Amish-style restaurant, with a theater/concert hall attached.  It turns out that the Amish don't seem to embrace vegetarianism, or baked goods without sugar.  Peter loved his meal, and I had a big, dinner salad, with peas, corn, egg, grated cheese and homemade bread (not whole wheat).  Afterwards, we went down the road to a custard/soft serve ice cream stand.  Peter's favorite.  The entire way down the road, about 10 miles, on both sides were beautifully manicured farms, with horses in every one.  I've never seen so many nice looking horses.  Many had horse buggies, and there were buggies on the road, periodically.  We did pass some young boys playing on their driveway.  Instead of playing with hotwheels and skateboards, they were driving a little horse cart behind a little pony.   So, I guess northern Indiana is indeed Amish country.

At our campgrounds, Twin Mills, there were several Amish/Menonite dressed families -- women with the same style of plain dress, down to their calves, men with sculpted beards.  However, these folks did have cars, and RV's.  So, there are definitely different levels of belief as regards to technology.  Interesting.

We ended the evening with a game of cribbage, outside, as it was such a nice evening.
