August 20 - on to Joliet, Illinois

The route to our current campgrounds in Joliet, Illinois took us through Hammond, Indiana. Peter made us stop at the Indiana Visitor Center, right at the Indiana/Illinois border, in Hammond.  He was SO EXCITED because there was a statue of Flick, from the movie "The Christmas Story".  Actually, the movie was based on the book by Gene Sheppard called "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash".  A semi-fictional retelling of the stories of Gene Sheppard growing up in Hammond, IN.  So, Flick was a young friend.  The statue was based on a Triple-dog-dare-you to touch your tongue to a frozen metal pipe.  We all know how that one ends.

Going through Hammond on I-80 was the busiest traffic we have encountered so far.  I was really glad Peter was behind me, and we were on the phone together, as we needed to change lanes several times, and the traffic made it hard.  I would tell Peter to move over, and then I would slip into the lane in front of him.

This campground is a Membership Resort, that gives discounts to Good Sam members, of which we are one.  It is a big parking lot, but in the center is a big fishing pond, a pool, and a great man-made swimming beach and small lake.  I wouldn't want to come here as a destination vacation, but for 2 nights, it works well.  It was SO HOT when we arrived, that I turned on the AC and then drove over to the swimming beach.  It was THE BEST place to swim.  There was a fountain in the center, the depth was probably 5 feet, it was all sandy bottom, there was a nice breeze  blowing, and the water was SO Refreshing.  I swam, getting my afternoon exercise in, then sat on the beach chairs in the shade and read.

After dinner, it had cooled off a bit, and we walked over to the fish pond and used the paddle boats to go around the pond.  We ended up just drifting in the center of the lake, watching the sunset.  How romantic.
