Oct 10 - Travel to South Oregon Coast, Coos Bay, Oregon

We traveled to our next RV campground, which was only 2 hours away, along the coast on Hwy 101.  This one is at a Sunset Bay State Park, which is one of three State Parks along the 10 mile or so Cape Arago Scenic Highway.  We got to the Park before noon, and was told that check-in was at 4pm.  So, we drove the RV and the car out to the Cape Arago State Park viewpoint--all of 5 miles away, and parked the RV there.  We had lunch and I left Peter to his computer and internet access, as the campground has NO cell service or internet.
I walked the trail out to an overlook that included several rocky platforms in the ocean.  They were covered with barking seals.  There were hundreds of them, basking in the sunshine.  We could hear them barking all the way to where the car was parked.  However, this overlook was so windy and cold, I needed to move a bit uphill, against a tree, in the sun, just to be able to stand there and watch.
I then took the car and went to the Shore Acres State Park, maybe 3 miles down the road.  This is the Park that Gabe & Andrea highly recommended, especially for the Formal Botanical Gardens.  I walked through the gardens, including the Japanese garden and pond.  It was nice, but I'm sure it would be exceptional when everything was in bloom in the summer.  It's hard to imagine a Timber Tycoon ordering such a garden to be created, back in the late 1800's.  The amazing thing about this park was the view overlooking the ocean and the rocks.  It had a wide rock wall, and I just sat and watched each area of the water crashing up against the rocks and flowing over the rocks.  Each wave created a different view.  But the other thing really different about this view was the rock formations themselves.  I think there is more sandstone than basalt in the rocks, for they formed these potholes and other formations unlike anywhere else along the coast that we have seen.  Amazing!
I went back for Peter, and we went to the campground, set up camp, and went for a walk around the campgrounds.  Then we drove into North Bend, to the Safeway and their Starbucks coffee cafe.  We needed the internet, so hung out there until time for a late dinner.  We found a funky, but interesting, pizza place with actually good pizza.
