Sept 21 - Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park, Hug Point, Oregon

Morning catch-up time.  Laundry, Blogging.  Lunch.  By then, the sun was shining, 70 degrees.  Beautiful.
Our destination today was to head south on Highway 101, down the Oregon coast.  Our first stop was at Ecola State Park, just on the north end of Cannon Beach, OR.  Since it was a beautiful, sunny Saturday, the northernmost beach, Indian Point, was full.  So we just went to the main overlook area, Ecola Point, which was spectacular enough!  The view is from a high bluff overlooking the ocean, sandy coves, and big rocks sticking up out of the ocean, making incredible silhouettes against the sky.  This is the area where the movie "Goonies" was filmed.
We then drove down to Hug Point, south of Cannon Beach.  This was at beach level, after you walked down the stairs to the beach.  It seems that everywhere we go around here requires us to climb steep trails to get to or back from our destination.  However, this was worth it!!  It was a series of sandy coves, and around each bend in the beach, just around the next rock outcropping, was another beautiful, interesting cove.  These had a series of caves, carved into the rocky bluffs.  And another cove had caves with a small water falls.  And the beach had mellow waves that would have called to any kid (or me, if it had been warmer) and crashed onto the rock outcroppings jutting out of the water.  What a great place to come with the family for a day at the beach! We sat on a log, and enjoyed the view.
It was an interesting day, in that we saw the coast from the high cliffs, as well as from the beach level.  Both were fabulous.
We ended up in the town of Cannon Beach, Oregon.  This is a artsy, touristy downtown, that has been very nicely updated.  Nice place to wander, checking out the shops.  Wandered down to the beach at the end of one street.  Had dinner at a really good pizza place.
