Our destination for today was Hurricane Ridge and trails. This windy, curvy road took us up to Hurricane Ridge, with incredible views of a whole range of mountains, and their deep valleys, and in the distance, the Hora Straight and the Juan de Fuca Straight, and even beyond that, the San Juan Islands. Amazing views.
We hiked the very nice Cirque trail, overlooking both sides of the Ridge. Then we continued on to the High Ridge Trail, leading to Sunset Point. The innocuous sign said 0.5 miles to the Point, and we said sure, let's do it. They didn't mention it was almost straight up. But it was worth it!! Oh, the views. And it is really special to look out at these mountain vistas, and see fluffy white clouds BELOW you, in the valleys or hovering around the peaks.
We ate lunch at the visitor center, overlooking the mountains. There was a deer munching the grass right by the visitor center, completely nonplussed by the many people taking pictures of him. We were also repeatedly approached by a big, grey bird, asking for a handout.
By this time, the clouds had descended and obscured our view, so it was time to make our way back down the mountain. Did the grocery shopping, and headed to the RV.
While sitting outside having a beer, after such a delightful day, our RV neighbor, Carla, came by to chat. We traded RV experience stories. They have traveled extensively, especially in the west, so was able to give me some tips. Looking back at the conversation, I realize that after driving 13,000 miles in the RV, and staying at 58 different RV parks and campgrounds around the US, we are no longer RV newbies.
I must say, the Olympic National Park has some of EVERYTHING - mountains vistas, mountain trails, glacial lakes and trails, ocean beaches and trails, and rain forests and trails! It has it all.
