Oct 5 - Canyon DeChelly National Monument, Chinle, AZ

As there is actually forecast rain for this afternoon, we decided to visit the Canyon DeChelly visitor center and drive the north rim to the two overlooks.  The first one, Antelope House Overlook, had a 1/2 mile walk, over flat rocks and bumpy terrain to get to the very high rim overlook.  You look down into these incredible carved out valleys, with bright green trees or grass at the bottom.  Interesting canyon walls, with colorful vertical black stripes where water flowed down from above.  And of course, the rock formations jutting out with narrow canyons with high walls make for a great vista.

Our second overlook was two separate sections -- Massacre Cave and Mummy Cave.  Apparently, a Spanish conquistador massacred about 125 Navajos on a ledge below the rim.  I certainly wouldn't want to trek down to a ledge that high above the valley floor.  Both sites were amazing vistas.

It was lunch time, and we had bought a picnic lunch, so we drove over to the Visitor Center intending to eat there.  However, by this time, it had started sprinkling, so we ate in the car in their parking lot.  We decided to go back to the hotel, as it was forecasted to rain all afternoon and into the evening.  Which it did.  Our hotel has a microwave and refrigerator, so I made salads in the RV, and brought out one of my frozen dinners and we had a nice dinner in our hotel room.  Handy having our RV right there, with all our groceries.
