Today was spent on Edisto Island, a barrier island off the shore of Charleston, SC. It was a beautiful day, and an amazing island. These were old plantation sites, growing cotton and rice before the civil war. We started at Edisto Island State Park and hiked some of their trails, bordering the marsh lands. Very different scenery and woods. Then we went to the State Park beach. Miles of beautiful beach, with only a few folks walking them. We sat on a log and drank our coffee, watching the ocean waves. There were lots and lots of sea shells of all kinds. We met a woman with a bucket full of amazing shells. She knew the names of each type. She inspired me to collect more than just a few little ones, if I can find them.
Then we went to Botany Bay Plantation. This is a site of two old civil war era plantations, now just in ruins. But they have turned it into a wildlife preservation area. It has a long walkway over to the ocean Beach. It turns out that the ocean level is rising, so the tides are coming in higher, and the water is killing off the forest, so now there are dead trees all along the beach. Sad, but it also had a beautiful look to it as well.
The roads leading into the plantation are like driving though a tunnel, with the live oaks leaning over the road, dripping moss. I really liked the look.
Great day.
