We spent the day in Beaufort, SC. According to Peter, this is the hot spot of the civil war. We started at the ruins of a large old Church, destroyed twice - once during the revolutionary war, and once during the civil war. The old "live oak" trees, with their drippy moss, were huge, and helped to create a really calm and reverent vibe.
We spent time at the Visitor Center located in an old armory, that looked like a castle. Peter chatted up the docent there, who was a direct descendant of a civil war enslaved famous black man. We toured the museum there, and chatted up the docent there. Peter can do a lot of chatting about history.
Then, we went to the Water Front Parkway, had lunch, and went on a carriage ride tour of historic Beaufort. Very informative. Lots of old mansions, now single family dwellings. Finally, we toured one of these old mansions, which is the only museum open to the public.
