Day 11 - Savannah, GA

When we were touring the historic mansion in Beaufort, SC yesterday, Peter did his Lafayette spiel with the tour guide at the end, asking if there may be someone interested in putting on a Lafayette event.  The guide told him to chat with the docent, who had just spoken with a Frenchman that morning about Lafayette.  It turns out to have been our friend Julian, who is documenting the Lafayette trail, throughout all 24 States.  And, he was in Savannah,GA.  Since Savannah, GA is just 45 minutes away from our RV site, and since we were planning on going there anyways, we met up with Julian today.
Savannah has a very large, nice historic district.  Historic parks, lots of refurbished historic homes,  and a very active waterfront.  So we walked around the district, on this beautiful day, and ended up at this large, park, complete with huge fountain, outdoor musician and artists.  We then met up with Julian, had lunch outdoors, then went on the free ferry across, up and back down the river.  Then we just hung out with Julian at an outdoor, upstairs patio, having a drink and appetizers.
Turns out Lafayette spent some time in Savannah, so, of course we had to see each place he stopped, and each historic marker.  It was noticeable that this was a very white tourist population, and that the focus of the historical monuments were on the Revolutionary War, and hardly any comments on the Civil War.  Just a few black history monuments.  Very different than in Beaufort and Charleston, SC.  Fun day.
