Mar 16 - Arley, AL

We drove north, through Tuscaloosa, AL on up to Arley, AL.  What was supposed to be a 3 1/2 hour trip took us 5 hours.  There was a 40 mile stretch of highway north of Tuscaloosa that was one of the most nerve racking drives I've done so far in the RV.  It was a 2 lane road, that wound steeply up and down, curved this way and that, through the AL "mountains", with no right side shoulder--instead it dropped down sharply.  And, the speed limit was 55 mph.  I was challenged to keep it up to 45.  And when there got to be a line of cars behind me, I had a hard time just finding a place to pull over to let them pass.
We finally got near the campground, and realized that we had the wrong address--it wasn't just Country Road, it was County Road 3919.  We were only a few miles past the correct road, but it was frustrating when I called the campground office to say I was lost, and just got a voicemail message.  But we finally arrived, and this Thousand Trails campground at least doesn't look like a RV trailer camp parking lot.  Our site actually looks out over the lake.  The biggest issue is that we are far from everything.  So...free RV camping vs. easy access to places...
We set up at a site where the previous long term RVer left a nice deck, complete with a bench, looking over the water.   Our next door RV neighbor invited us over to their campfire, so after dinner, we chatted with them and another couple around the fire.

  1. Well, Peter, if you are not going to be going by Lenox, AL, at least try to stop in at Heflin, AL and maybe stay a night or two at Cheaha State Park where the Holms almost had their baby.

Tell the people you meet in Heflin, or at the park, that you know me, and see what they say.
