June 8 - 10, 2023 - American Friends of Lafayette annual meeting, LaGrange, GA

June 8th - we flew to LaGrange, GA for the annual meeting of the American Friends of Lafayette.  The weather was delightful, and historic LaGrange, where we stayed in a hotel right across from Lafayette Square, was very inviting.  In the center of the square, is a large statue of Lafayette, and a beautiful fountain.  Cute shops all around the square, and, of course a yummy ice cream shop.

June 9th - the annual AFL meeting was held on the beautiful campus of LaGrange College.  After the meeting, we watched a theatrical performance about Lafayette's life, written by Dr. Richard Ingram, our LaGrange host, and performed by many of Richard's LaGrange friends.

June 10th - Apparently, on Lafayette's March 31, 1825 tour, he crossed the Chattahoochee River from Georgia into Alabama in LaGrange.  So we visited the site of his crossing (Yoopee - don't tell Peter I said that).  The Creek Indians welcomed him as he traveled this road.

Then we visited the site of Fort Mitchell, built in 1813 during the Creek War.  It was one of the principal gathering places for the forced removal of the Creek Indians to the West in 1836, called the Creek Trail of Tears.

Dinner, and another very interesting performance-by impersonators of James Armistead Lafayette (Lafayette's black friend) and Lafayette's wife, Adrienne Lafayette.  They were very well performed, and again, written by Richard Ingram.

June 1th - Nice breakfast at the college, then shuttled to Atlanta airport and flew home.
