June 17, 2023 - Castine, Maine, St. Andrews, New Brunswick

June 17, 2023

We departed in the morning and arrived in Castine, Maine.  This town is located on the tip of a peninsula, into the Penobscot Bay. It is one of the oldest communities in North America.  We heard a lecture at the Castine Historical Society, located in the Maine Maritime Academy, and then went on a bus tour of the old coastal village.  One of their claim to fame is that the author, Stephen King, has two houses there.

We had a guided tour of the ruins of Fort George.  This is where a revolutionary war battle took place in 1879, which did not end well for the our guys, due to bad intelligence.  Also, Paul Revere, who led a contingent, was charged with cowardice and treason (later to be acquitted).  And, Peter knew nothing about this battle!

Comment on the countryside -- EVERYWHERE there were purple wild lupines growing.  What a pretty landscape.

Back on the bus and on to St. Andrews, New Brunswick, another town on the tip of another peninsula, reaching out into Passamaquoddy Bay.  Our hotel was right on the bay.  Unfortunately, it was raining.  This evening's dinner was on our own, so we got a bit drenched walking to & from the restaurant, which was on the main tourist street, with lots of interesting shops.

After dinner, we had another very interest lecture about the history of the St Andrews Anglican Church, in the church, and the part it played in the town's history.
