June 16, 2023, Portland, Bath & Bucksport, Maine

 June 16, 2023.

We started the day with a trip to the same lighthouse on Cape Elizabeth that Peter & I visited yesterday, as it turns out.  It was so pretty, it was worth seeing twice.

We boarded the tour bus for our ride up to Bath, Maine.  It was really a very comfortable bus, with seating for 50.  As we were only 25, we had plenty of room to spread out. In Bath, we visited the Maine Maritime Museum.  Bath was renowned for shipbuilding, and became the 5th largest seaport in the mid 1800's.  They built wooden clipper ships, until they were replaced with steel ships.  The museum was at the location of one of these shipbuilders.  The ships were huge, so had to be built right along the water's edge, so they could be pulled downhill into the water.  We saw a demonstration with a model ship.

We continued "Downeast Maine" where we stopped at the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory.  The Bridge crosses the Penobscot River, and has the tallest bridge observatory in the world.  It is 447 feet tall.  We rode an elevator up to the top, and the view was impressive.  Its a double spire cable bridge, with the observatory on the top of one of the spires.

Our final stop was in Bucksport, Maine, just on the other side of the river.  We had a nice dinner, and our hotel was right along the Penobscot River's edge.  There was a nice walking trail along the river.  After dinner, another couple and us walked it and chatted.  Nice.
