What a great trip. I'll generally report each day in a separate blog post.
June 14 & 15, 2023 -- Portland, Maine
June 14, 2023 - We drove the 2 1/2 hours to Portland, Maine. Since we got there early in the afternoon, we drove over to Fort Allen Park, a historic waterfront promenade. We walked the trail, and sat and ate our lunch overlooking the ocean. We went to the hotel and arranged to park our car at the hotel for the 2 weeks. We had dinner and orientation. There were 25 of us on the trip. We were encouraged to mingle throughout the trip, to get to know most of the folks.
June 15, 2023 - We started the day with a lecture by a local expert in the history of Portland and how the waterfront became a fishing, shipping and trading mecca. Then we went on a walking field trip to the historic waterfront, known as Old Port. Had lunch in the Old Port historic district.
The rest of the afternoon and evening were free time. So Peter & I walked the waterfront district. Lots of canals, each with big warehouses used in the shipping businesses. Some are now refurbished as high-priced condo apartments, right along the canals. They have started to make this area more into a tourist attraction, so its an interesting blend of work and play. The historic district now includes lots of tourist shops, and I can only take so much that, before getting bored.
Since we had our car, we decided to drive over to Fort Williams Park and the Portland Head Light House. This is a big, beautiful park, right along the coast. Great view, great rocks to climb on, and a picturesque view of the light house. At one end of the park, there is the abandoned Goddard Mansion, built around 1859 and acquired by the Army and used as NCO quarters.
