We took three days, 2 nights at RV campgrounds, to get to Williamsburg, Virginia. We packed up all of the food into the RV, and got an early start. The first day's trip, we ran into a big traffic jam on the Interstate, and then drove through an intense rain storm. The storm was so bad, that the power went out at the RV campground we were going to the Pocono Mountains, in Pennsylvania. However, by the time we got there it was no longer raining. We set up the RV, walked around the campground, and the power came back on just in time for me to microwave our dinner. Since we were only going to be gone a week, and three days of that were expected to be eating out with the American Friends of Lafayette (AFL) group, I had cooked extra dinners and froze enough to bring, so I wouldn't have to actually cook dinner on the trip.
The trip the 2nd day was long, but we had no real travel problems. The campground was in Front Royal, Virginia, at the northern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains Skyline Drive. Very pretty area. The campsite was right on the North Fork Shenandoah River. The biggest issue was that it was sweltering HOT and humid. We set up the RV and got the air conditioning running. There was limited cell phone coverage and NO internet service (unless we purchased it from the campground, which we did on the way back). After the day of traveling we had dinner, and just read for the evening.
The trip the 3rd day was shorter and easy. We arrived early afternoon, and set up the RV. This campground is the closest one to Colonial Williamsburg, so it was full, and looked like an RV parking lot with some trees. That worked OK for us, as we did not expect to spend any real time there. We had an early dinner, and then drove in to Yorktown, to the Riverfront, where we were to meet up with the AFL group for appetizers and a lecture about the French Connection in Yorktown, during the Revolution.
