Friday, June 11th - We got up early, as we needed to be in Gloucester, VA by 9 am, which was an hour away. They had the annual AFL Business meeting in the Gloucester Colonial Courthouse, built in 1766 and still in use today. After the meeting, there was another lecture, lunch, and then a private tour of the Gloucester Museum of History. Although, I must say I wasn't very impressed with the museum. Oh well. After the museum we drove over to a private Happy Hour at the Gloucester Brewing Company. Great tasting beer and some nice conversations.
We drove back down to the Riverfront in Yorktown for the AFL Annual Banquet. This was the first time I actually sort of "dressed up" in a couple of years. There were 90 people attending this weekend, which was twice the usual number, so it was lively and interesting. We sat next to a young couple (the majority of folks are not "young") and found out how they became interested in Lafayette. The evening ended with a talk by Mark Schneider. He works at Colonial Williamsburg as an historian and interpreter. He gave a really fascinating talk about the complicated relationship between Lafayette and Napoleon. He is a great public speaker.
